About

Asian pears, or “apple pears,” are renowned for their round shape and incredibly crisp, apple-like texture. The flesh is exceptionally juicy, sweet, and mildly flavored, making them wonderfully refreshing. Their thin skin ranges from yellow-green to bronze-russet and is usually fine to eat.

In Central California, the harvest season runs from Late July – Late September. Unlike most other pears, the Asian pear is non-climacteric, meaning it ripens fully on the tree and should be ready to eat immediately after picking—it will not soften further once harvested.

To determine ripeness, choose a fruit that is firm to the touch and has developed its full color. Asian pears are best enjoyed chilled and eaten fresh. They are excellent sliced into salads or slaws, as their crunchiness and resistance to browning make them ideal for raw preparations.
